The mission of Chinmaya Vijaya is to provide a safe place, food, health care, and education to orphaned girls who are from age 5 to 11 in the Guntur District in India. Girls who are terminally ill, abandoned or disowned by their parents, or who have lost their parents to natural disaster or disease are welcomed. Chinmaya Vijaya does not discriminate based on race, religion, or creed. The girls live in an atmosphere where they are encouraged to bond with each other and to develop personally through education.
Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala is the recipient of the 2010 State of Michigan Distinguished Citizen Award and the 2009 Hurley Medical Center Pinnacle Award. He has been involved in various community groups, such as serving as the director of the Telugu Association of North America, a not-for-profit organization that focuses on integrating Telugu people into American society, and as the treasurer for CORD USA, a non-profit with a variety of programs with goals such as empowering women and improving health and sanitation. Along with his wife, Dr. Sumathi Mukkamala, AppaRao Mukkamala co-founded Chinmaya Vijaya, an all-girls orphanage.
