In addition to supporting medical professionals, AAPI operates several community outreach programs designed to improve public health. Launched in 2013, AAPI’s Childhood Obesity Awareness Campaign aims to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and its consequences, including hypertension, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.
Working in partnership with local governments, schools, and other nonprofits around the nation, AAPI educates children, parents, and teachers about how to tackle childhood obesity. The organization also advocates for obesity-related public policy changes and organizes two- to three-hour obesity walkathons at schools across the country. AAPI has already involved a number of schools in its Childhood Obesity Awareness Campaign and hopes to reach dozens more by the end of 2014.
