Within the AMA, all physicians who received their professional degrees from non-U.S. institutions automatically become members of the IMG section. Approximately 38,000 physicians make up the AMA's IMG section, which acts as an advocate for IMGs within the United States medical field. As a whole, the section works to support integration of IMGs into the greater physician community and to present itself as a unified whole to promote members' interests.
The AMA's IMG section also provides resources for international graduates seeking to practice in the United States. Graduates can visit the section's website for information on steps required for certification and licensure, as well as for immigration details. IMGs may also use AMA resources to learn about residency program applications and can take part in mock interviews to prepare for residency matching.
