A breast ultrasound is used to determine if a mass in the breast is fluid-filled or solid, particularly with individuals with silicone breast implants or dense breasts. The procedure is recommended after a mammogram or physical exam reveals anything suspicious or abnormal. A breast ultrasound, similar to a sonogram, uses sound waves to produce a picture of the tissues within the breast. The area near the chest wall is one of the most difficult regions to examine with just a mammogram, but a breast ultrasound will cover the whole area. Additionally, it is painless and doesn't utilize harmful radiations or x-rays. However, one of the most important factors to remember regarding a breast ultrasound is that it should not be used to replace a mammogram.
