About Apparao Mukkamala
Dr. Apparao Mukkamala is a radiologist with a passion both for his profession and for helping better the lives of others. Born in Budhavaram, India, Dr. Apparao Mukkamala grew up in humble circumstances, the seventh of 10 children in a home without proper flooring, running water, or nearby paved streets.
Determined to use his intellect to help improve the lives of others, Apparao Mukkamala enrolled in medical school at 16 and earned his medical degree by the age of 22. In 1970, he and his wife immigrated to the United States for his residency in radiology at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, where he has practiced since 1975 and served as chairman of the radiology department since 1989. In addition, he donates his professional services at Genesee County Free Medical Clinic and care for patients irrespective of their ability to pay.
Along with his wife Dr. Sumathi Mukkamala, Dr. Apparao Mukkamala established Chinmaya Vijaya, an orphanage for young girls, and NRI Medical College and Hospital. All three facilities are in Andhra Pradesh, India, near his boyhood home. The orphanage provides a safe environment as well as quality education.. The medical college and hospital Dr. Mukkamala helped to establish provides training for India’s future doctors as well as much-needed medical services for the general population.
